Rapper AKA Talks Race And Not Releasing An Album This Year
Twitter in
South Africa was thrown in a debate on whether Wayde van Niekerk’s 400m gold
win and record should be celebrated as black excellence or colored excellence.
Rapper AKA
being someone who always shares his opinions on such heated issues joined the
conversation in a series of tweets.
"First off
let's be proud that a SOUTH AFRICAN smashed the world record and claimed gold
representing our country," he says. “We also need to recognize that
Coloured people have been stereotyped to death. We all wear cavellas and talk
the same apparently.”
However the “One
Time” hit maker said that denying colored people Wayde’s victory is ridiculous
as it is saying that the victory is not black excellence.
AKA also said
that he has been told many times on Twitter that he is not black but however
thinks that it’s not up to anyone to dictate who he is as a person.
“I identify
100% with being Coloured(in terms of upbringing and family) and at the same
time consider myself "black" within that context,” he further said.
Later on the
rapper said that he will not be releasing any album this year after a fan who
goes by Lutho Dulaze asked him.
“@akaworldwide
should we expect an album from you this year?” to which the rapper replied with
a “No”.
AKA last
released a follow up to his 2011 debut album “Alter Ego” in 2014 titled “Levels”
which had hits like “Congratulate” and “All Eyes On Me” featuring Burna Boy, Da
L.E.S and JR
